Alternate Reality Gaming is proud to present METAL CLASH
Metal Clash was an obscure 1990s fighting game title from a little-known developer called "Speedfreax". It was a generic street fighter knockoff with a small roster, with one element to set it apart from the rest: A cast composed entirely of Heavy Metal frontmen. Its origins are as mysterious as the company itself, but it's believed that the game began as a result of an office argument as to who would win in a fight, Ozzy or Dio.
The game would eventually feature, in order from left to right:
Row 1:
Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Ronnie James Dio of Black Sabbath and Dio.
Row 2:
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, King Diamond of King Diamond
Row 3:
Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, James Hetfield of Metallica.
However, the company soon ran into legal (and financial) difficulties. Ozzy Osbourne was soon told what a video game was, James Hetfield was infuriated that his character was not invincible as per the contract, Bruce Dickinson refused to record voice clips but threatened legal action for sampling his voice or hiring an imitator, and Ronnie James Dio found out that Ozzy Osbourne was in the game. Perhaps most damning of all, the developers had never secured music licensing rights - only likeness rights of the performers. Burdened by the financial weight of the likeness rights alone, and the shortcoming of the soundtrack, the game entered limbo and was subsequently canned.
Speedfreax ceased to exist, and nobody can say what happened to the company or the only known copies of Metal Clash. Most musicians involved refused to talk about it in the rare case they were ever prompted, though Lemmy Kilmister stated that he believed the game to have been released, and simply got screwed out of royalties. Some claimed that King Diamond had one of the only remaining copies, but King Diamond refused to answer our calls. We're not allowed to say where we got this screenshot of the character select screen, but rest assured that it is a rare treat indeed.
